‘Military motherhood’ awards launched

By Karen Jowers - Staff writer

Could your favorite military mom use some recognition and $5,000 in cash?

Operation Homefront and CincHouse.com have launched an essay contest, open through March 31, for their inaugural Military Motherhood Award. You can nominate your spouse, friend or yourself, describing why your nominee deserves the Military Motherhood Award.

Eligible are active-duty, National Guard and reserve moms; the spouses of active or reserve component troops; mothers of service members, and others. Nominees might have children, stepchildren, foster children, or have other unique circumstances.

“This is a celebration of motherhood, and there aren’t any hard and fast rules about what constitutes an amazing mother,” said Meredith Leyva, founder of Operation Homefront and CinCHouse.com.

The winning mom will receive $5,000 cash and will be flown to Washington for an awards ceremony May 8.

The essay section on the nomination form accepts up to 3,000 characters — about 500 words.

Operation Homefront will select the top 20 nominations, and allow the CinCHouse community of military wives and women in uniform to vote for the top five. A panel of judges will select the overall winner.

Nice Matters

CavMom has nominated me for the Nice Matters Award! CavMom is a great military mom blogger and I read her blog every day. I'm so honored to have her nomination.

To make it even more fun, I get to nominate 7 bloggers. It's hard to keep it to just 7, but I'll do my best.

De'on at Gunz Up : She is a Gold Star Marine mom. We've actually met in person and she is a dear, dear friend and truly nice in the best possible sense of the word. She is one of those people who is lit up from within.

Dixie at Dixie's Heart and Soul: She is a brand new Marine mom still spending time with her son while he is on boot leave. Those are precious days that pass all too quickly!

Just John at Write on the Right: It seems strange to award a girly graphic like this to a Marine Gunnery Sergeant who is a former Drill Instructor, but I can't help it! He has been so nice to us here at LMP and so helpful to me personally with all my dumb Marine mom questions (What does this abbreviation mean? What can I post on the blog about where he is? and on and on ). He has also patiently listened to my Marine mom bragging... it's so much fun to brag to someone who knows what you're talking about. So John, even though I'm sure none of your recruits ever thought so, we here at LMP think you are NICE! Don't feel like you have to display the graphic though. Don't want to hurt your reputation.

Beth at Blue Star Chronicles: She is another military mom and she was instrumental in helping me get the blog off the ground. It took SEVERAL emails with her for me to figure out our first blog roll. She basically gave me the "blogging for complete idiots" course. Thanks Beth!

Big White Hat: Here I go again with the award for a guy, but he really is such a nice guy. BWH is a true family man and what is nicer than that?

Flag Gazer at Gazing at the Flag: She is so supportive of our troops and of LMP. She has a great blog and I always enjoy her posts and usually learn something new too.

Don at Don's Mind: He too is always so supportive of our projects here at LMP. He was our first contributor in this year's care pack drive. He's a Navy vet and a proud grampa.

Slogan Press Release

I know that blondiebee has already posted that the Marine Corps slogan has won its way onto the Advertising Slogan Walk of Fame. I just wanted to pass along the Marine Corps Recruiting Command’s official press release.

MARINE CORPS RECRUITING COMMAND (Quantico, Va.) – Madison Avenue’s Advertising Walk of Fame now has a new member in its ranks. “The Few. The Proud. The Marines.” will be forever enshrined on the famed walk, the announcement, Sept. 26, was done during Advertising Week 2007, held in New York, NY.

Advertising Week, the largest and most prestigious annual gathering of
advertising and media industry leaders in North America, has named the United
States Marine Corps an inductee to the “Walk of Fame” for advertising slogans.
Voting took place via the World Wide Web Aug. 28 through Sept. 25.

"This slogan reflects the unique character of the Marine Corps and underscores the
high caliber of those who join and serve their country as Marines," said Major
General Richard T. Tryon, commanding general, Marine Corps Recruiting Command. “Such recognition reaffirms the special relationship we have with the American public.”

“The Marine Corps is proud to receive this prestigious recognition. This award not only celebrates the slogan “The Few. The Proud. The Marines.,” it also is an opportunity to recognize the men and women who serve our country around the world as U.S. Marines,” said Lieutenant Colonel Mike Zeliff, assistant chief of staff, advertising, Marine Corps Recruiting Command.

We recognize the extended Marine Corps family—former Marines, family and
friends—who took the time to vote to help the Marine Corps receive this award,
Zeliff added.

“During this celebration, we remember our Marines deployed around the world, their friends and families and our partnerships with agencies like J. Walter Thompson, who help the Marine Corps succeed in protecting our nation,” Zeliff said. Our heartfelt thanks for voting “The Few. The Proud. The Marines.” into history as an inductee into the Madison Avenue Advertising Walk of Fame.

Golly! Jim Nabors to be promoted

Sept. 7, 2007; Submitted on: 09/07/2007 02:23:15 PM ;
Story ID#: 200797142315
By Mr. Chuck Little, Marine Forces Pacific
MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP H.M. SMITH, Hawaii (Sept. 7, 2007) -- Mr. Jim Nabors will be “promoted” to the rank of honorary corporal by Lt. Gen. John F. Goodman, commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Pacific, in a special sunset ceremony at Kuroda Field, Fort DeRussy, Waikiki, Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 5:30 p.m. This promotion is in honor of Mr. Nabors' years of contribution to the Marine Corps' image worldwide through the "Gomer Pyle, USMC" TV show, and will be held on the 43rd anniversary of the show's premiere. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
On Sept. 25, 1964, Gomer Pyle marched into America’s living rooms and hearts and put a very human – and often humorous – face on the United States Marine Corps. “Gomer Pyle, USMC” proved that the Corps did indeed possess a sense of humor and could laugh at itself. The show lasted five years in prime time, and has endured almost constantly since then in syndication. That is a testament to the enduring qualities that Gomer possessed which shone through night after night on that program: honesty, loyalty, and devotion to duty, Corps and Country. These qualities remain a cornerstone of our Corps today, and in that respect, the show is no less timely than it was 43 years ago. The uniforms, the people, and some of the social situations have changed over the years, but the Gomer of yesterday is still relevant today, exhibiting our hallmarks of Honor, Courage and Commitment.
Mr. Nabors was made an Honorary Marine on Aug. 9, 2001, and received an honorary promotion to lance corporal at that time.

IMMORTALIZE – “The Few. The Proud. The Marines”

The following was sent to me by the Command of our local Marine Reserve Unit. Please take a moment to vote for our beloved Marines and their slogan.

The United States Marine Corps and JWT are honored to announce that "TheFew. The Proud. The Marines." has been nominated BEST SLOGAN for the Madison Avenue Advertising Walk of Fame.

More than just a slogan, the three sentences represent what Marines are all about, epitomizing the challenge of becoming (The Few), and the reward of being (The Proud), one of the elite (The Marines).

Suffice it to say, few slogans convey such a Proud tradition. With your help, we now have the opportunity to immortalize these words as an American cultural icon. The Marine Corps will compete with 26 others for entry into the hall of fame based upon total number of votes received. The winning slogan will be etched on a plaque, and set alongside other time-honored brands on Madison Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets.

We ask that you vote for "The Few. The Proud. The Marines." by CLICKING HERE <http://advertising.yahoo.com/advertisingweek_07/slogan_poll.html> .

If you have Internet access in more than one location, you can vote more than once, so remember to vote from home, work, the library, and anywhere else you can find a computer. Be sure to pass this email along to your co workers, family members and friends so that they may also vote. We are confident a concentrated effort will deliver "The Few. The Proud. The Marines." into the hall of fame, in its rightful place among elite American slogans. Voting begins on August 28th and runs through September 24th. Remember to vote again at each location you have access to the Internet.

We thank you for your support.

Thinking Blogger Award

I am so honored that our little blog was awarded the Thinking Blogger Award by De'on at Gunz Up. You can read what she has to say about the award here.

Rules:
Should you choose to participate, please make sure you pass this list of rules to the blogs you are tagging. I thought it would be appropriate to include them with the meme. The participation rules are simple:

1. If, and only if, you get tagged, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think.

2. Link to this post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme.

3. Optional: Proudly display the 'Thinking Blogger Award' with a link to the post that you wrote.

Please, remember to tag blogs with real merits, i.e. relative content, and above all - blogs that really get you thinking!

I guess I can't tag De'on since she was awarded the Thinking Blogger Award by Flag Gazer, even though her blog most definitely makes me think and is one of my daily reads. De'on also gave the award to Jarhead John who is another of my daily reads, so that at least narrows things down a bit. It's very tough to choose just 5, but here they are:

5 blogs that are always well written and thought provoking.

1. Big White Hat

2. Military Families Voice of Victory

3. Hillbilly White Trash

4. Political Pistachio

5. An Ol' Broad's Ramblings
